Shaky Ground

After reading the first few chapters of Shaky Ground, it got me thinking about the issues at hand in the 1960s and the issues at hand today.  It seems that in the book has a really good focus on the feminist movement.  I think that not many people in today's world consider the feminist movement to be a big deal.  Not many people mention it.

The book states that "men and women are polar opposites" (Echols, 119).  I think that this statement is true in some ways and false in other ways.  Women and men can be completely different as far as emotional and physical stability goes.  Yet, they can be similar in the same ways.  Women tend to be the more emotional ones, while men tend to be the more physical ones.

But, after reading the post written by Mark Frakes, I began to think a little differently about the "norm" with women and men.  Mark said that it seems to be that people think that all men only want sex and that everything that they do is centered at that goal.  I disagree with that statement because some men have different characteristics that make them different from other men.  Some guys might be focusing mainly on sex while others are focusing mainly on emotional relationships.

Overall, I like the chapters that I have read so far

Freedom Summer

I found Freedom Summer to be a very interesting story of the summer of 1964.  From the discriptions in the book, it seemed like a terrible 3 months for people, blacks especially.

I think that after looking at the pictures in the book, I can better understand the book.  It is easier for me to actually see the harshness that the people had to suffer through.

Freshman year

so basically this past year has been the biggest transition that i have had to work my way through.  it has been fun though.  in high school i had totally different thoughts about how college would be and being in the second semester of my freshman year has made my outlook on things much different than they were.
in high school you can't go do whatever you want when you want. but i thought that in college that you have free reign on anything whenever you want, who cares about class?
now that i have found out that you can't do whatever you want whenever you want i think that i have realized that i have changed quite a bit.
so ill start out by describing what changes have been made in my life by saying that money is a thing to take care of, not hand out as fast as possible.
i have two jobs and i thought that living paycheck to paycheck would be alright because you don't really use cash or a debit card on a college campus much so i just spend my cash when i'm home on the weekends.  but i have recently found out that that is not the most responsible thing ever.  saturday afternoon the starter in my taurus went out so i have no car to drive at the moment.  i found out that a starter will cost me around 100 to 15o dollars and i don't have that.  and i've also realized that in a couple years i'll be completely on my own.  no help from my parents on paying bills and taking care of myself.  just me myself and i.  i need somewhere to live, furniture for that place, food, insurance on my living space and car, clothes, and much more.  now, granted, i should have a full time job by then and might even keep one of my part-time ones for extra money, but still...  you need money to get started.
in high school, the homework was really relaxed and fairly easy.  it wasn't really good prep for college though.  i can't tell you the amount of papers that i have written in the first semester of my freshman year.  it's definitely more than i wrote in my four years of high school and none of the papers in high school were the caliber that is expected in college.  so adjusting to different writing styles and harder topics to write on isn't all that easy, but we're all getting by.
beings as i go home every weekend to work, i haven't really had the chance to be away from my parents and siblings for months at a time like some of the other people on our campus.  i guess that it would be harder for those people to go home and deal with having rules again, and i do to an extent.  its really not as bad as you think though.  yeah, you may have a curfew again, but big deal.  you pretty much get everything handed to you at home, dealing with the rules is just a minor thing that you can do for your parents.  i mean, they give you a home, food, and tons of other things when you are at home, so why complain?
this may be a ton of bull, but its my thoughts on this year so far.  i've gone through really big changes since high school, but they are for the better for sure.  its made me a better person in the process.  comment if you want.
